Cassette Beasts is a monster-catching game that has some similarities to the Pokémon video game series. The game is played in third-person, aerial perspective and consists of three basic screens: an open world on the island of New Wirral, where the player has been transported; a battle screen seen from the side; and a cassette player menu interface, in which the player can configure their monsters, items and settings.
The player can use their monsters to battle other monsters. The game initially offers the choice between “scary or cute” to choose the first monster, and unlike Pokémon, the main character is able to transform into monsters to battle. The game does not use the random encounter format of the first Pokémon games, and all monsters are visible in the open world. During battles, each monster can use attacks that are assigned to stickers, which can be transferred between different monsters. Monsters have hit points that determine whether they can be used, and the player character has their own health bar, which, once it reaches zero, means the player is sent back to HarborTown. The player receives experience points instead of the monsters, meaning players provide base stats that the monsters add, providing freedom to experiment with different settings.
Recording monsters from the island is an integral part of the gameplay. The fights use a number of debuffs and think critically about how different elements would react to each other when using different moves. Different monsters have different status attacks and elemental strengths and weaknesses, which can have far-reaching consequences (for example, a Lightning-type attack will vitrify an Earth-type monster, turning it into a Glass-type). Any of the game’s monsters can be temporarily “fused” into another monster during battle. There are 120 monsters featured in the game, but there are also over 14,000 fusions.
New Wirral, the game’s open world, is an open world. Saving certain types of monsters gives the player character more moves that they can use outside of battle to explore the island. The player can receive quests from people in HarborTown and can also receive tips on where to go next. The player can also find hidden chests and puzzles by walking around the open world and stumbling upon them. The game includes a permadeath mode (similar to Pokémon’s Nuzlocke rules), where monsters that are defeated die permanently on the playthrough, and a map randomizer, to increase replayability.
