Chernobylite Torrent is a post-apocalyptic survival game in development by The Farm 51. But it’s not just another survival game. It’s an adventure driven by the story and atmosphere set in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. You play as Igor Khymynuk – a physicist and a former worker of the Chornobyl Power Plant, who appears on the territory of the tragic industrial catastrophe 30 years later. Grief, obsession, and the need to know the truth are driving Igor into the dangerous journey where every next minute poses a deadly threat not only from the physical but also from the supernatural world.
Chernobylite’s main feature is the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone which is its alive protagonist. The areas are 3D-scanned and they look just as beautiful as they are disturbing and irradiated as hell. Ruined buildings, wild nature, and the power plant itself, all create one of the most atmospheric worlds I’ve experienced in recent times. The moment you enter it, the cold shivers run down your spine. The eerie silence is suddenly interrupted by the hissing of Geiger counters, by the sickening howls of the mutated monsters hiding in the thick grass, and by your imagination that starts to unravel.

Chernobylite offers some of the usual survival mechanics, such as collecting resources, crafting, and building a base, but these are not an end in themselves. The materials you collect with your scavenger rig are used to craft tools, weapons, and other equipment to ensure you can survive the hostile environment. The base is a safe retreat, as well as a place to store all your supplies, plan your expeditions, and interact with other survivors you may meet. These survivors are no passive NPCs, however.
They have information you can ask them about, and they can also be recruited to accompany you on your expeditions. Forming alliances and gaining their trust, however, will not be easy – each character has their motives, and hide their true thoughts and intentions. Every action you take and choice you make will affect their loyalty to you.
The Exclusion Zone is not only full of mutated monsters and hostile factions. There is also some mysterious force, “The Presence”, that manipulates events and affects the environment. You will need to navigate through anomalies and distorted realities, and the feeling of being watched is prevalent throughout the game. To top it all, there is also a rogue stalker that stalks you throughout your travels, “The Black Stalker”, that you cannot defeat in combat. All these add another level of tension and survival to the exploration.

The story of your fiancee’s disappearance and the events that unfold after, are told to you in multiple fragments. Most of the story is told through the environment, characters, and recorded tapes. Not knowing the full truth until you experience it yourself keeps you hooked and hungry for more. Who is lying? What is real? All questions you’ll ask yourself during the story, make you wonder what part of it is a product of Igor’s slowly dying brain.
