The plot thickens. You are not governing a group of noble knights, but four undead heroes – their history unknown. A mighty necromancer, the elusive Cryptmaster, has brought you back to life, for his pleasure. Your goal? To reach the elevated layers of a long-lost subterranean city, by fighting off unnatural monsters and puzzling over otherworldly riddles. Regaining your memory, and discovering the reason for your resurrection, is secondary.
The most innovative thing about Cryptmaster is, without a doubt, its word-based mechanics. No more smashing buttons to combat. You battle by solving lost spells and typing their names. All the riddles and quests are solved using your words. A talking door may require you to provide a punny password. A grumpy ghoul may require you to, well, berate him, to get him to relax his hold on the important item.

The game accommodates various styles of play. You can either type in your answers or use voice recognition to voice them. This allows for some inventive problem-solving. Maybe a slime monster is vulnerable to a well-crafted insult. Maybe a lovesick toad can be persuaded with a sonnet (Cryptmaster seems to have no qualms about dark humor, so beware of the unintended consequences!).
The genius of Cryptmaster lies not just in its word-based mechanics. The world it creates is a deliciously dark mishmash of the whimsical and the ghastly. You will visit the dank bone houses, the unsettling Sunken Sea, and the deformed Downwood; and each area is packed with its unique brand of kooky inhabitants. From amorous amphibians to snarky ghouls, everyone you meet provides humor in this otherwise grim scenario.
Cryptmaster, on the surface, has an awful lot of games going on within its word-based system. The creatures, for example, are collected almost as an afterthought, but they go a long way towards fleshing out the game. Capture and wield the abilities of your defeated enemies, why not? Then there are the cards, which feature in their battles during the main adventuring proceedings, bringing a dollop of luck-based tactics to the mix. And then there’s the bard rap battles – well, you just don’t see that in every RPG, do you? (They’re often pretty funny.)
