Development of Cuphead began in 2010, with just brothers Chad and Jared, the brothers working on the game from their respective homes in Toronto and Saskatchewan. At this point, the game was considerably smaller, the game would consist entirely of a series of eight Mega Man-style boss battles, as the studio was small, doing anything larger than that would be difficult, especially considering the time-consuming nature of the style.
However, after some very well-received showings at fairs like E3, the studio realized that the game needed to be bigger to satisfy the huge audience that was interested in its unique style. This meant more bosses, properly designed platforming levels, and a world that brought them all together. It also required a lot more people and a lot more time.

Art Style
The game’s art style was inspired by the animation style of 1930s cartoons and their “subversive and surrealist” elements, such as those from Fleischer Studios, Disney, and Warner Brothers.
Chad Moldenhauer, who had previously worked in graphic design, manually drew the animations and painted the backgrounds. He colored the characters in Photoshop (his only change to the process used in 1930).
