Far Cry Primal is set in 10,000 BC in the land of Oros, after the end of the last Ice Age. It follows the character of Takkar, a hunter from the Wenja tribe.
The story begins in a cave, where Tensay tells the player about the Wenja and how they found Oros. He then states that rival tribes arrived as well and brought darkness to the Wenja, these tribes were the Udam, the flesh eaters and the Izila, masters of fire. He then goes on to say that light comes in the form of the Lost Wenja brothers.
Takkar is first seen with his group hunting woolly mammoths, as they went several days without food on their journey to Oros. After successfully separating a young woolly mammoth from its herd and killing it, the hunting party is ambushed by the Bloodfang Sabretooth. After everyone except Dalso and Takkar have been slaughtered, they are cornered to the edge of a cliff and Dalso saves Takkar by grabbing him and causing them both to fall down the cliff face. Takkar survives, but Dalso has only a few seconds to live. After Dalso takes his last breath asking Takkar to find Oros and the rest of his tribe, Takkar respects him, giving him a proper burial.
After crafting a bow, gathering goat meat and finding shelter, Takkar notices an arrow created by Wenja. He then creates a club, sets it on fire, and follows a trail using his Hunter vision. He encounters dire wolves, which he scares away with the torch. He then enters a cave and finds Sayla Amputating Ears out of the dead bodies. Sayla mistakes Takkar for an enemy and fails to notice a sabretooth tiger even after Takkar warns her. Sabretooth’s tiger throws Sayla, but Takkar holds it with his torch, giving them both the chance to escape and finally enter Oros.
Sayla then realizes that Takkar is a Wenja and the two introduce themselves. Takkar questions why Sayla was in the tiger’s cave, with her replying that she needs ears. Sayla then takes Takkar to her house and gives him berries to eat. She informs Takkar of Ull, the leader of the Udam tribe, and how they destroyed Wenja’s village, leaving all the Wenja in Oros scattered and homeless. They then discover that her encounter with the tiger Sabretooth left Sayla with a lethal wound to her back. Takkar is told to find green leaves to heal the wound. During his search, he sees the UDAM for the first time. After saving Sayla, Takkar goes to explore Oros. Before doing so, Sayla informs Takkar to tell any Wenja he meets about their location as it is safe.
In searching for Wenja, Takkar enters a cave and meets Wenja’s shaman Tensay, who states that Takkar has a strong spirit and introduces himself appropriately after Takkar calls him ‘Wolf Man’. He makes a potion while informing Takkar that he asked for a strong spirit, expecting a bear, rhino or tiger, so he came. Takkar invites Tensay to the village, but he refuses. After adding Takkar’s blood to the potion, Tensay informs Takkar to drink it. After refusing, Tensay forcefully does so, and Takkar faints. Takkar then sees a vision surrounded by beasts that neither fear nor attack him. He then follows an owl spirit through walking and flying. Towards the end of the vision, Takkar manages to tame the owl, saying that it will now be his eyes in the sky. Waking up, Takkar suspects it is just a dream. Tensay claims it wasn’t a dream, saying the owl spirit declared him master of the beast. He then sends Takkar on a little quest to tame a white wolf and then joins the village.
