GTA San Andreas Torrent as it’s often called, is an open-world action-adventure game that catapulted Rockstar Games to superstardom. Released in 2004, it remains a fan favorite for its sprawling world, engaging story, and (of course) over-the-top action. The events of San Andreas take place in 1992 in the fictional United States state of San Andreas — based on the early 1990s portrayal of the states of California and Nevada — which consists of three main cities: Los Santos (based on Los Angeles), San Fierro (based in San Francisco) and Las Venturas (based in Las Vegas).
Various regions of forest, desert, and small rural towns are scattered among the large cities. Los Santos is surrounded by the rural region of Red County, while San Fierro has its surroundings made up of the forested and mountainous region of Flint County and Whetstone. Las Venturas borders the desert region of Bone County — where the Area 69 restricted zone is located (inspired by the United States Air Force’s Area 51 military base in Nevada) — which borders Tierra Robada County. Liberty City, the city featured in Grand Theft Auto III that is loosely based on New York City, also makes a cameo appearance in the game.

The world of San Andreas is part of the “3D Universe” canon of the Grand Theft Auto series, although unlike its predecessors which are set in this continuity, the game incorporates fictionalized versions of real-life landmarks and environments from cities and states in the United States. Its map remained for almost a decade as the largest in the series, until it was surpassed by the representation of Los Santos from Grand Theft Auto V.
The player takes on the role of Carl “CJ” Johnson (voiced by Young Maylay ), a veteran member of the Los Santos street gang Grove Street Families, who left for Liberty City five years earlier in search of a better life but returned home after his mother’s death. The gang is led by CJ’s older brother Sean/”Sweet” (Faizon Love) and includes his childhood friends Melvin “Big Smoke” Harris (Clifton Powell), Lance “Ryder” Wilson (MC Eiht), and wannabe rapper Jeffrey “OG Loc” Cross (Jas Anderson). Throughout the story, CJ befriends several characters who become important allies, including Cesar Vialpando (Clifton Collins Jr.).
