Story
The story has been restarted since Killer Instinct 2, entering a completely different timeline. While many story elements were taken from the original timeline, this game has an entirely different story, moving away from the tournament aspect and focusing on actual story-based combat. The seasons take place in chronological order – season 1 details eight of the fighters caught up in one of Ultratech’s tournaments, season 2 details the introduction of ancient heroes and horrors into the world, and season 3 details the fight against Gargos as the heroes fight to stop their invasion.
The megacorporation Ultratech, while still as powerful as ever, is now perceived by the public as a humanitarian organization that seeks only the good of humanity. However, the cybernetic CEO ARIA begins to push humanity to the breaking point, testing them and pushing them further, trying to force humans to evolve for their own survival. His tampering awakens ancient abominations, and soon the entire Earth is placed in danger as part of ARIA’s final test.
Game development stage
On March 16, 2010, Ken Lobb announced that he was not working on a “Killer Instinct 3,” but that he might bring the series back someday.
On September 17, 2012, Microsoft filed to renew the Killer Instinct brand. In an October 2012 interview, Rare veteran Lee Musgrave, who was Rare’s former head of art, spoke about the issues of making Killer Instinct for Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA): “We came close to releasing a port from Killer Instinct a few times, but there were licensing hurdles for it, and there was never enough interest to push it forward. On December 4, 2012, Microsoft’s renewal of the Killer Instinct trademark was rejected by the United States Patent and Trademark Office due to the possibility of the game being confused with the unrelated TV series of the same name that ran for one season in 2005. Microsoft had six months to respond to the decision. The trademark dispute was resolved when Microsoft and Fox reached an agreement in April 2013.
