In an alternate dimension, a Lombax Resistance fighter named Rivet is on a secret mission to steal an infobot in a dystopian city full of robots. She uses a robot disguise to blend in with the locals and manages to obtain it without being caught, but the escort group she stole it from soon realizes she is missing and spreads out their forces to find it. Before escaping and deciphering it, however, she defies her resistance companion’s instructions on her communicator and instead pursues an organic citizen who is being hunted by one of the town’s soldiers and rescues him first. Shortly afterwards, the city’s patrol forces locate her to retrieve the stolen infobot and she retreats.
Meanwhile, in Ratchet and Clank’s dimension, the Festival of Heroes is being held in Megalopolis on Corson V , to celebrate the duo’s many achievements in heroism, although they mention that it has been years since they last did something heroic. The festival is hosted by Captain Qwark, Skidd McMarx and Rusty Pete. Qwark also announces that Clank has a gift to present to Ratchet at the start of the parade and the two begin heading there. The celebration is interrupted, however, by Goons-4-Less, who have just changed their name, as there is a bounty on Ratchet and Clank. After confronting the attacking bandits, they arrive at the front of the parade, where Clank reveals that he has rebuilt the broken Dimensionator from the end of his last adventure. He gives it to Ratchet, so he can travel between dimensions and find his kind, the Lombaxes, who are lost in another dimension.
Before Ratchet can voice his concerns, however, the device is stolen. by Dr. Nefarious on his ship Party Crasher, who hired the Goons in place of his assistant Lawrence, who was on paid paternity leave. After chasing him through the city and catching up with him at the train station, Nefarious confronts the two and attempts to use the Dimensionator against them, but Ratchet impulsively shoots Phase Quartz’s energy core, causing a large explosion that launches Nefarious and his ship into a nearby building and causes mass dimensional chaos to begin occurring across the planet. After picking up a piece of the phased quartz that fell near him, Ratchet uses it to approach the portals that are now appearing and open breaches in the damaged dimension as part of a new makeshift device called the Rift Opener.
