RimWorld is a sci-fi colony simulator run by an intelligent AI narrator. Inspired by Dwarf Fortress, Firefly, and Dune.

You start with three survivors of a spaceship crash on a distant world.

RimWorld is a story generator. It was designed to co-author tragic, twisted, or triumphant stories about imprisoned pirates, desperate colonists, famine, and survival. The game works by controlling the “random” events the world throws at you. Every storm, pirate attack and merchant-traveler is a card placed in your story by an AI Storyteller. There are several narrators to choose from. Random Randy does crazy things, Classic Cassandra seeks to gradually increase the tension, and Patient Phoebe just likes to relax.

Your colonists are not professional colonists – they are survivors of a spacecraft destroyed in orbit. You could end up as a nobleman, an accountant or a housewife. You’ll get more settlers by capturing enemies in combat and convincing them to join, buying people from slave traders, or taking in refugees. Therefore, your colony will always have a heterogeneous team.

Each colonist’s background is monitored and affects how they act. A noble will have great social skills (to recruit prisoners or negotiate trade prices, for example), but will refuse to perform physical labor. A farmer knows how to grow food from his long experience, but is unable to carry out research. A scientist is a great researcher, but he is not so good at performing social tasks. A genetically modified killer, on the other hand, cannot perform any task other than killing – but he does it very well.

Colonists develop – and destroy – relationships. Everyone has their own opinion about others, which determines whether they will become lovers, marry, cheat or fight. Maybe two of your best colonists are happily married – until one of them falls in love with the dashing surgeon who saved her from a serious injury.

The game generates an entire planet, from the poles to the equator. You choose whether you want to land in a cold northern tundra, a dry desert, a temperate rainforest or a steamy equatorial jungle. Different areas have different animals, plants, diseases, temperatures, rainfall, minerals and terrain. The challenges of surviving in a choking, disease-infested jungle are very different from those in an arid desert or frozen tundra with a two-month growing season.

Travel the planet. You are not stuck in just one place. You can form a caravan with people, animals or prisoners. Rescue former allies kidnapped from pirate outposts, participate in peace negotiations, trade with other factions, attack enemy colonies, and complete other missions. You can even pack up your entire colony and move to a new location. You can use rocket-powered transport pods to travel faster.

You can tame and train animals. Pets are adorable and will cheer up settlers who are sad. Farm animals can be trained, milked and sheared. Combat animals can be thrown at your enemies. There are diverse animals – cats, labradors, grizzly bears, camels, cougars, chinchillas, chickens, and exotic alien-like life forms.

People in RimWorld constantly observe their situation and surroundings to decide how they will feel at all times. They respond to hunger and fatigue, to witnessing deaths or disrespectfully unburied corpses, to being injured, to being left in the dark, to being trapped in cramped quarters, to sleeping outdoors or in the same room as others, and many other situations. . If they are too stressed, they may attack other colonists or break things around their colony.

Wounds, infections, prosthetics and chronic conditions are monitored in each part of the body and affect the characters’ abilities. Eye injuries make it difficult to shoot or perform surgery. Injured legs slow colonists. Hands, brain, mouth, heart, liver, kidneys, stomach, feet, fingers, toes and more can be injured, sick or missing, and all have logical effects on the game. Other species have their own body styles – take away a deer’s foot and it may still limp with the other three. Take the horn off a rhino and it will be much less dangerous.

You can repair body parts with prosthetics that range from primitive to transcendent. A peg leg will allow So-and-so to walk after an unfortunate incident involving a rhino, but he will be quite slow. Buy an expensive bionic leg from a merchant the following year and so-and-so will become a superhuman runner. You can even extract, sell, buy and transplant internal organs.
