Hopoo Games announced on May 30, 2017 that they had been working on Risk of Rain 2, the sequel to the first title, for around six months. In an interview with PC Gamer, Duncan Drummond explained that the sequel would be a 2D game, with the player controlling the monsters from the first game. However, the desire to display items collected by the player would have been difficult using 2D sprites, which led to a 3D approach to the game.
The game uses the Unity engine, and Hopoo had to learn to develop 3D worlds from scratch. Some Risk of Rain monsters are returning for the sequel, while others are making their debut. The change from 2D to 3D affected his abilities. For example, monsters now often have a ranged attack, like the Lemurians’ fireball or the Golems’ laser.
Multiplayer mode adds improvements using Steam’s peer-to-peer connectivity. Match allows the player to search for open games, while private matches and split-screen games are also available.
Hopoo Games anticipated the game’s early access release in early 2019. On March 28, 2019 , this version was released on Steam, published by Gearbox Publishing. The early access period lasts about a year, with three priorities for the full release: more content, a true conclusion and boss fight, and polish.
A Nintendo Switch version was announced in 19 August 2019, during an Indie World presentation. On August 30, 2019, the game was released for all consoles. On August 20, 2020, the game officially left Early Access with its 1.0 update. It was released for Google Stadia on September 29, 2020.
