The game’s lead designer, Derek Yu, is involved in the culture of independent game development and draws inspiration from some of its traditions in his game design. For Spelunky 2, many of his design principles were based on two different stories he loved hearing from people who played his game:
- Something genuinely unexpected happened in the game.
- Memories were created by playing with family, friends, and strangers.
Spelunky 2 was designed to be a true sequel to Spelunky HD, adding more to what had already been established in the first game. Due to its massive scale, Mossmouth (Derek Yu’s game development studio) co-developed the game with BlitWorks, a company known for working on ports of games such as Spelunky HD, Super Meat Boy, Don’t Starve, Sonic CD and Jet Set Radio.
The team also wanted to create a world with a much more “alive” feel compared to the original game. To achieve this, the game’s story and lore were greatly expanded and the world was made much larger, with diverging paths, secret areas and countless NPCs, each with their own missions or services. The Entrance Cave has also been transformed into a sizable camp, where the player can interact with different objects and other playable characters, each with their own special dialogue.
Spelunky 2 also planned to add online multiplayer to help the players to connect more easily with the game. Although online multiplayer was released alongside the PS4 edition, it was only released for PC on December 14, 2020 to avoid severe latency issues initially experienced by PS4 players.
Reception
Spelunky 2 was met with critical acclaim. It received an average rating of 91 on Metacritic and positive reviews from sites such as Polygon, IGN, Rock Paper Shotgun and Eurogamer.
The game was praised for “reinventing perfection”, for adding new content that it felt organic and added to the original Spelunky HD formula.
Spelunky 2 was nominated for “Best Indie” at the 2020 Game Awards.
