Stellaris is a real-time grand strategy game set in space from the year 2200. Players take control of a species in its early stages of interstellar space exploration, shortly after the invention of faster spacecraft technology than light (FTL). ready to claim a place as one of the “star species”. Depending on various factors, such as the civilization’s ethics and the player’s desires, the empire’s ultimate goal may range from galactic conquest, resource accumulation, and technological supremacy, to peaceful coexistence or absolute destruction of all sentient life. The player controls ships, including science, construction and military ships. Combat includes space combat and ground combat and is more focused toward the big picture, preparation, and strategy. There are also diplomatic options, such as alliances and trade agreements with other races.
The game begins by choosing one of the pre-defined empires, using a random one determined by the game and revealed only when the game begins, or by creating a species. The process involves choosing a mix of positive and negative characteristics that make up your species. Then the player customizes his species’ empire. In this phase, the player chooses the ethics and civility of the empire (with ethics and civics points, respectively), which can give various buffs, restrict certain characteristics (a spiritualist empire cannot use robots) and governments can be chosen (an authoritarian empire is incapable of being a democratic government) and changing the way information is presented to the player. Civics can include, originating from a world devastated by nuclear war or starting with a secondary race, such as robots or a strong but non-intelligent worker race. These secondary species are created in a similar process to the one mentioned previously.
All ethics, apart from the more recent Gestalt Consciousness, have a normal and fanatical version that represents the alignment of the empire. Fanatical versions of ethics give larger bonuses than their normal variants, but generally have even greater restrictions and always assume 2 ethics points instead of the normal 1 point per ethics. A special ethic mentioned above, called Gestalt Consciousness, makes the empire a collective mind or a robotic empire, takes over all points of ethics and offers new civic means available only to the collective mind and robotic empires. Both ethics and the majority of citizens can be changed throughout the game. Then, the player customizes the flag, name, world, engineering style and ruler of his empire.
