In 2011, Tommy Refenes began working on a mobile game derived from Super Meat Boy. The game was originally called Super Meat Boy: The Game and was announced in 2014 with a release scheduled for 2015. However, little information was released.
A few years later, Team Meat restarted the project. The game would now be a sequel rather than a spin-off. The game was revealed at PAX West 2017 and although the reception was mostly positive, it still generated some controversy with fans. The game was scheduled to be released in 2018.
In December 2018, the game received its first official trailer. The release was postponed until April 2019. However, on April 4, the game was postponed again. They announced that a second trailer would be made and would have a final release date. It was released on December 23, 2020.
Gameplay
Super Meat Boy Forever brings back the challenging gameplay of the original game, as well as the main villain Dr. Fetus. Meat Boy and Bandage Girl’s son, Nugget, has been kidnapped by Dr. Fetus and the couple must work together to rescue her. Meat Boy and Bandage Girl are now able to kick and punch, where before they were completely defenseless. Players will also have access to jumps, jump attacks, slides and dives, using just two buttons. Very different from the original game.
Players will need to avoid obstacles and defeat multiple enemies in countless levels. Levels are randomly generated in predefined ‘chunks’ that depend on the player’s skill level. The game includes six new levels, each with its own secrets. After completing a level, it will be rebuilt into a much more difficult version, but still far from impossible to complete.
