Players start by creating a character and then a world. Multiple characters and multiple worlds can be created. World generation is based on random seeds, so no two worlds are usually the same. The game begins with the character appearing in the middle of his new world, armed with a Copper Short Sword for protection (a Wooden Sword in the Windows Phone version, Windows Phone version and Nintendo Nintendo 3DS version), a Copper Pickaxe for mining and a copper ax for collecting wood. The player is then encouraged to gather resources (such as ore), build a base to defend against enemies, and generally overcome various challenges in the game. Tips to aid game progression are provided by the NPC Guide that appears nearby.
The game includes a wide range of features. Players generally spend their time exploring, building things, collecting/crafting items (mainly to strengthen the character), fishing, and fighting monsters and bosses. Because Terraria is a sandbox game, players are not tied to working toward any specific goal and can decide for themselves what to pursue. A popular objective is to make the character as strong as possible and ultimately defeat the game’s most difficult bosses and events, such as the Moon Lord.
Terraria can also be played in multiplayer mode, in which more than a character can play in the same world. Multiplayer games are cooperative games in which players work together to build things or overcome challenges, such as in single-player games or competitive PvP, in which players or teams fight each other.
The game’s time system Terraria is real-time, the game’s time additionally alternates between day and night. The game can, however, be paused (in single-player mode), but only if the auto-pause option is enabled in the settings. You can also save and exit the game whenever you want and continue later. However, the character will teleport back to the spawn point.
