Story
The Stranger, also known as “the unknown variable”, is a passenger aboard the colony ship Hope, which is destined for the distant Halcyon system, entirely owned and operated by corporations . During the trip, the ship’s jump drive malfunctions and it is forced to continue using its sublight engines, extending the trip from ten to sixty years. As Halcyon has been colonized by other means, the Hope is unexpectedly found adrift with its colonists unable to be revived and the Halcyon Holdings Corporate Board has decided to abandon the colonists. The Hope is placed in orbit over the ice planet Typhon and its existence is covered up.
Thirty-five years later, the colony is indeed on the brink of total collapse. Despite the Council’s assurances, life in the colony is far from perfect. The main problem is the slow and subtle starvation of the entire population due to the Earth’s food being very poor in nutrients.
To combat this, the Council has tasked its top scientists with developing whatever means necessary , as a powerful appetite suppressant, derived from raptidons. This suppressant was supposed to be used in the form of toothpaste and was supposed to reduce the amount of resources people consume, thus buying scientists time to find a more permanent solution.
To make matters worse, malnutrition caused a new disease, commonly known as the plague, to spread among the citizens of the town of Edgewater, owned by Spacer’s Choice. With the only source of food within the city walls being locally produced pickled snacks, the population began to develop symptoms of the plague. However, those who chose to leave the city and became defectors, led by a woman named Adelaide McDevitt, found a way to grow crops in the soil of Earth 2 using ground up human remains as fertilizer and discovered a way to combat the disease. Unfortunately, the animosity between Edgewater and the deserters prevented the cure from spreading among the town’s population.
