On December 7, 2017, Red Barrels published an update on its future plans, which included Outlast 3 and a related untitled project that was in the works. According to Red Barrels, since it was not possible to include downloadable content in Outlast 2, the studio decided to instead work on a separate project that will include highly requested features, likely alluding to Trials’ co-op mode. While not a direct sequel to Outlast 2, the game’s story is set in the same universe.
On October 31, 2019, Red Barrels published a teaser image of its upcoming project with the caption “Where freedom ends.”
On December 4, 2019, Red Barrels officially announced its next title, The Outlast Trials, set during the Cold War era. The initial reveal post also featured an image with characters wearing night vision goggles, leading some readers to speculate that it could be a virtual reality game. The developers later clarified that the game will not have VR capabilities. The Outlast Trials was developed by a team of around forty people.
History
The game takes place in the same universe as other Outlast-related titles and takes place in 1959, during the height of the Cold War era, where players take on the role of guinea pigs – referred to as Reagents – kidnapped by the Murkoff Corporation. Trapped in a secret facility comprised of a dozen warehouses connected by underground tunnels, players will be thrown into a series of physical and mental trials, tormented by iconic characters and challenged to survive alone or as a team while keeping their sanity intact. Inside the warehouses, Murkoff built scaled-up models of real-world environments. Between tests, the Reagents return to the Sleep Room, where Murkoff takes good care of them. Reagents can interact with Murkoff employees to obtain the items they will need for the next trial.
